Topfield TF7710HDPVR

No comments July 30th, 2009

I live in the whipwhops of New Zealand.
We have Analogue VHF TV where I live and get 2 channels.
We moved to a house with a Satellite dish.
I bought a Hyundai HSS-760A satellite receiver and have used this over the last few years.

Topfield TF7700HDPVR
The picture above is of the silver model, I have the black model with mirror finish VFD display (looks even better)

We often needed the ability to be able to record 2 channels at once for work but could only record one on a DVD-R and watch another of VHF.
So I bought a Topfield TF7710HDPVR, same as the TF7700HDPVR but it seems I have the Euro English model, the Motherboard even says 7700.
Dual LNB input (and output)
320GB Hard Drive.
DVB-S and DVB-S2 (HD)
1080i upscaling
Record 2 different channels of different Satellites and watch a timeshifted 3rd.
Timeshifft up to an hour (resets if channel is changed)

The Toppy has great picture quality, can’t really fault it.
HD broadcast (finally was able to test one in NZ) is just amazing compared to SD
The Unit looks really good, and the VFD display is great with it’s display of channel name and other info.
BUT the device is rather unstable, it will lock it self up (remote will not do anything) and will need resetting.
Until I took the top cover off it would reset it’s self every 1/2 hour or so, making any timed recording impossible, also means timeshift would reset.
With cover off the unit has not reset it self normally.
But in FTP mode it becomes even more unstable and can reset it self lock up etc.
But the feature is great for getting stuff to and from the unit (via 100MBps LAN)
Very limited Southern Hemisphere Satellite support, needed to add Optus D1 and edit Optus D2 to get a picture.

Topfields Vega 2.04 Application is great for Satellite editig, and even more informative app is Top Set 2.0
TFDown is a great app for Firmware up/downloading.

The aim of all this is for the house at Lake Ohau and just sorting out what I’m going to need.
So the old Sky dish has gone to Lake Ohau with the Hyundai 760A so the kids can have something to do on a rainy day.
But in the meantime at Mt Cook, I’ve got a 90cm Dish with 2xQuad output Universal LNB’s
The 2 LNB’s have output to a Disq switch each so the 2 Satellite inputs on the Toppy can receive signals of different transporters at once.
So currently have access to Optus D1 and D2.
In the future the other 2 outputs on the LNB will be used by 2 other receivers (in the distant future)
90cm dish is great, the other week it was covered in snow along with LNB’s but still got a picture, where as the old 60cm would need constant cleaning with broom.

I’ll do some more stuff with this in the coming weeks.
If you need more info on any of the above let me know.

Must get back to the blogging

Been rather busy of late and not had much time to do stuff here.
Will try and change that.
Got some projects on the go, not video related or even notebook related but might be of interest to someone all the same.

Now what project to start first.
